the greek word for church, ekklesia, means "an assembly" or "gathering of people". the chuch in it's widest sense is all Christians in every time and place.

baptism is a visible symbol of being part of the church, as well as being a symbol of what it means to be Christian. it signifies being cleansed of all sin,
there was a time when some of you were just like that, but now your sins have been washed away, and you have been set apart for God. you have been made right with God because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God have done for you. (1 corinthians 6:11)
as well as dying to an old life and being born into a new life with Christ.
for you were buried with Christ when you were baptised. and with Him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. (colossions 2:12)
Jesus himself was baptized and commanded His followers to
...go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the holy Spirit. (matthew 28:19)
the Christian church worldwide is approaching 2 billion in number and is growing rapidly, led by growth in africa and other less developed countries.
