what is the bible?

at its simplest level, the bible (sometimes called the scriptures) is a collection of 66 books, originally written in a mixture of hebrew, aramaic and greek. these books range from history books and poetry to love songs and letters. more than that though, the bible is a story of God and his love for the world he made and the people in it, as well as being full of stories about those people.

in fact, as Christians we believe that the bible (as originally given) is the "inspired and infallible word of God". that's not to say that it wasn't written by real people with real stories to tell - we know that it was. however, even though humans wrote the words, it was God who inspired and guided them:
"all scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults and for teaching how to live right. using the scriptures, the person who serves God will be capable, having all that is needed to do every good work." (2 timothy 3:16-17)

why read the bible?

we believe that the bible is an instruction manual for life - whilst it cannot provide a map to show us exactly what to do in every situation, it can act as a compass and point us in the right direction. over matters of belief and behaviour it has supreme authority. furthermore, we believe that the bible is one of the ways God communicates directly with us and, as such, we believe that it is important to read the bible so that we can get to know God better.
