article: meditation

interesting article about meditation from matt glover.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word 'meditation'?

On Sunday night we had a variety of responses including 'old men with beards', 'silence', 'Eastern religions' and 'incense'. Interestingly, things that are closely associated with Eastern or Transcendental meditation are those that most readily come to mind.

Eastern meditation is all about disconnection. It is an attempt to empty ones mind and body from everything and everyone in an attemot to become free form the pain and reality of life and enter into the plain of Nirvana. In a culture that is busy and rushed and lifestyles are so hectic that we are literlayy working ourselves to death, this type of meditation has found a new level of popularity and even has identifiable health benefits such as lower blood pressure and stress levels.

But is this something Christians should be involved in? Sort of...

urgent update!!

This an urgent reminder that the rock climbing event planned for next Sunday (04/06/06) has had to be postponed due to unforseen circumstances. We will try and re-arrange it as soon as possible, but for now we can't say when.

However, there will be ak as normal next week, with a surprise topic.

So in summary - NO rock climbing next Sunday, but ak as normal instead.

gap year opportunity

Full Time Youth Worker and Gap Year Team

Project 31 is a new youth work initiative based at the Cheadle Hulme Methodist manse, which becomes vacant in August 2006.

The churches in Cheadle Hulme are committed to developing new ways of encouraging and supporting young Christians in their discipleship, seeing young people come to faith in Christ and developing fresh ways of being church. The house will be the base for a team of 'gap year' volunteers who will work together with, and under the supervision of the youth worker to carry out the aims of the project. Those appointed will commence work on Monday 4th September 2006.

Project Aims
With the support of the local churches the team will:
- set up peer led youth cells in each church
- create a youth congregation
- reflect on new ways of being church
- engage in community initiatives in collaboration with Stockport Youth Services and the Police
- work with Christians in Schools Trust
The team will receive training and mentoring for themselves on:
- Christian discipleship in suburbia
- Peer-led groups
- Spirituality and youth work
- Leadership and management skills
- Vision making

Appointments
We are looking for young Christians with a passion for sharing their faith with their own generation and a desire to discover what the Spirit is saying to this community about new ways of being church.
The Youth Worker will be employed according to JNC scales. The person may choose to live in the Project 31 house with the team, or in their own accommodation. A housing allowance will apply as appropriate.
The Gap Year volunteers are asked to provide £2,500 towards the project, out of which they will receive a weekly contribution to cover living costs.
