new to ak

home > alive and kicking > new to ak

the hutalive and kicking meet every sunday (with a very few exceptions) at the hut, the youth centre behind edgecliff high school (up castle street). the evening runs from 7pm until 9pm and we try and finish as on time as possible!

the welcome pack is available to the right.

who can come?

anybody of high school age! there's no special requirements, no audition, application or waiting list, just turn up! the information below will help you to know what to expect on your first visit...

we do have to hold an emergency contact details form (available to the right) for everybody who comes - if you don't bring one with you we'll give you one to take home. don't worry, they don't commit you to anything!

what to expect:

when you arrive, there'll be a time just to chill, get to know people and see what's going on. people will probably be kicking a ball around, playing football or frisbee outside if it's light enough or just chatting. don't be afraid to dive right in get involved - nobody will mind. you might want to introduce yourself to one of the leaders as well so that we know who you are - check out the pictures so that you know what they look like.

the hut from about 7.20pm, we usually carry on with some sort of game as a whole group before breaking for drinks and (if you're lucky), biscuits. after that we usually break down into two or three groups to look at the next part of the current theme (check out the programme for details. if you're not sure which group to go for, just ask somebody.

we round the evening off with a short prayer time - nothing scary, just a quick time to share anything we're worried or happy about with each other and with God.

during the summer holidays, things are slightly different - if the weather's good we usually go across to the school playing fields for games, sports or other activities.

socials

every few weeks we have a social event - sometimes at the hut, sometimes somewhere else. if ak are transporting you somewhere else, you'll need a consent form for the event (available to the right) which needs to be returned a week before the event to guarantee a place. if you haven't filled in an emergency contact details form before we'll need one of them from you too.

socials are usually great times to get to know people better in a friendly and non-threatening atmosphere. no scary stuff, just fun!

what else goes on?

at the information table (on the end of the coffee bar) you'll find several things:
ak prayer pot - if you've got things to pray for, one way to pray is to write your prayer on one of the bits of paper provided and to pop it in the pot. of course, you can pray at any time (and without needing paper and a pen!)
the hut programmes - copies of the current ak programme.
leaflets - there's usally masses of other leaflets lying around with information about events, holidays, charities and more. have a look and see what you can find!

you can also keep in touch during the week on the alive and kicking open facebook group. please note that we need to know who you are before you can join the alive and kicking facebook group.

you might see people wearing alive and kicking t-shirts or hoodies - don't worry, it's not a uniform but if you would like one to tell people about ak everytime they see you then just ask - £16 for hoodies, £7 for t-shirts and £9 for skinny-fit t-shirts.

if you want to take one of the bibles that we use home with you then please do - there's no charge. if you want to write your name in the front and bring it along to ak when you came, even better!

finally, remember to enjoy yourself! any questions, just ask a leader - they don't bite!
